Field-Tested: The 3 Best Byron Bay Beaches for Volleyball, Frisbee & Group Fun

Field-Tested: The 3 Best Byron Bay Beaches for Volleyball, Frisbee & Group Fun

It’s 11 AM on a Saturday, and the scene is as predictable as the tide. A group of friends, armed with an esky and a brand-new volleyball, arrive at Main Beach. Their energy is high. They’ve seen the photos, they’ve imagined this moment. But reality hits fast. They wander past the surf club, dodge families under umbrellas, and try to find a patch of sand between the flags that’s bigger than a beach towel. The sand slopes awkwardly towards the water, and every stray serve threatens to land in a stranger’s picnic. Within twenty minutes, the game is abandoned. The volleyball sits deflated in the sand. The perfect holiday moment has dissolved into frustration.

We’ve seen this exact scenario play out hundreds of times. After hosting countless groups at Broken Head Holiday Park and hearing their beach-day stories—both the triumphs and the disasters—we’ve learned a crucial lesson: not all Byron beaches are created equal, especially when it comes to sports.

The internet is full of lists of Byron’s “best beaches,” but they won’t tell you the practical truth. They won’t tell you that the most famous spots are often the worst choices for a proper game. This isn’t another one of those lists. This is our curated, field-tested guide. We’ve filtered out the crowded, the sloped, and the over-hyped to give you the three definitive winners for a perfect, stress-free day of group games.

Why “Just Picking a Beach” in Byron is a Recipe for Failure

Before we reveal our top spots, it’s important to understand why the obvious choices often fail. Turning up to Main Beach or Wategos with a frisbee is a rookie mistake.

  • Crowd Density: Byron’s main tourist beaches are packed, especially from mid-morning onwards. You’ll spend more time apologising to your neighbours than playing.
  • The Sand Slope (Camber): Many beaches have a significant slope down to the water, making any game with a net or defined playing area almost impossible.
  • Surf Clubs & Flags: The patrolled areas on Main Beach are a hive of activity, with Nippers, surf lessons, and flagged swimming zones taking up the prime, flat real estate.
  • The Tide Trap: Some of Byron’s most beautiful beaches, like Clarkes, practically disappear at high tide, leaving you with nowhere to stand, let alone play.

We’ve done the legwork, endured the failed attempts, and found the spots that consistently deliver. Here are the beaches that will guarantee your day is a success.

Winner #1: The Endless Expanse – South Tallow Beach

Best for: Large groups, beach cricket, frisbee, and anyone who wants to feel like they have the whole beach to themselves.

If your ideal beach day involves zero chance of hitting a stranger with a wayward frisbee, South Tallow is your paradise. While the northern end near the Cape can get busy, the southern stretch—conveniently located right on the doorstep of Broken Head Holiday Park—is a vast, sweeping expanse of firm, flat sand.

We’re not exaggerating when we say it feels endless. This stunning coastline is part of the culturally significant Arakwal National Park, a place of deep importance to the Bundjalung of Byron Bay Arakwal People. Its sheer size means that even on the busiest public holiday, you can walk for a few minutes and find a massive, empty stretch of sand to set up your game. The sand here is compact and level, making it perfect for everything from a serious game of beach volleyball to a casual kick of the footy.

The Insider Details:

  • Access: The easiest access is via the tracks from Broken Head Holiday Park or the public path at the end of Seven Mile Beach Road.
  • Wind: It can get windy, as it faces the open ocean. On a windy day, find a spot closer to the headland for more protection.
  • Crowds: Almost non-existent compared to the main town beaches. It’s a true local’s escape.

💡 Tested & Approved: For the ultimate beach cricket pitch, head to South Tallow an hour or two after high tide. The receding water leaves behind a perfectly flat, hard-packed strip of sand that’s as good as any manicured oval. After trying to play on the soft, sloping sand at Main Beach, this is a game-changer.

Winner #2: The Low-Tide Playground – Clarkes Beach

Best for: Family games, touch footy, and activities that need calmer water nearby for a cool-down dip.

Clarkes Beach, nestled between Main Beach and The Pass, is a Jekyll and Hyde location. At high tide, it’s a narrow strip of disappointment. But at low tide? It transforms into one of the best sporting beaches in the region.

When the water pulls back, it reveals an enormous, almost perfectly flat expanse of sand. Because it’s sheltered by the cape, the waves are often gentler, making it a fantastic option for groups with kids who want to alternate between playing games and splashing in the shallows. The view back towards the mountains is spectacular, and the atmosphere is a perfect blend of lively and relaxed.

The catch is timing. You must plan your visit around the low tide. Check a local tide chart before you go. Arriving two hours before low tide and leaving an hour or two after will give you a perfect four-to-five-hour window of prime playing time.

The Insider Details:

  • Parking: The carpark here is notoriously difficult. Your best bet is to arrive early (before 9 AM) or be prepared to park further away and walk.
  • Tides: We can’t stress this enough: check the tide times! High tide leaves virtually no beach to play on.
  • Facilities: There are good facilities nearby, including toilets, showers, and the excellent Beach Byron Bay café for a post-game coffee.

💡 Tested & Approved: Don’t even attempt Clarkes on a weekend afternoon at high tide. We’ve seen countless groups arrive with gear, only to turn around and leave. After testing all times of day, the undisputed best experience is a weekday morning on a run-out tide. You get the best space and the easiest parking.

Winner #3: The Quiet Corner – North Belongil Beach

Best for: Groups who want a more bohemian, relaxed vibe and don’t mind a short walk for their privacy.

Belongil is a long stretch of sand, but the real magic for group sports lies north of the creek. Most visitors stop at the main entrance or near the Belongil Bridge, but if you’re willing to walk 10-15 minutes further north, you’ll be rewarded with wide-open spaces and a fraction of the people.

The beach here opens up, offering plenty of flat, usable sand for setting up a net or marking out a field. The vibe is decidedly more chilled-out than the town centre beaches. It’s a place where you can spread out, turn up your music (respectfully, of course), and truly relax into your game without feeling like you’re on display. The walk itself is beautiful, taking you away from the hustle and into a more natural, undeveloped stretch of coastline.

The Insider Details:

  • Access: Park near the Belongil Bridge and be prepared to cross the creek (it’s usually only ankle-deep, but check after heavy rain) or park further back in town and enjoy the walk along the beach.
  • Dog-Friendly: This is an off-leash dog area, so it’s a great option if your furry friend is part of the group. Just be mindful of other dogs when you’re playing.
  • Facilities: There are no facilities on this northern stretch, so pack everything you need in and, more importantly, pack it all out.

💡 Tested & Approved: Many people are put off by the creek crossing, which is exactly why it works. After trying to find space on the busy southern end, we found that committing to the 10-minute walk north consistently guarantees you a private arena for your games, every single time.

Your Expert Basecamp for the Perfect Beach Day

Knowing where to go is half the battle. The other half is making it easy. This is where a smart choice of accommodation transforms your holiday from good to effortless. Staying at Broken Head Holiday Park positions you as the ultimate planner, with the perfect basecamp for a stress-free day of beach fun.

Imagine this: instead of fighting for a car spot, you simply wander down a private track to the vast, empty expanse of South Tallow Beach. You didn’t even have to pack a frisbee or a cricket set because you borrowed one from our reception. You spend the afternoon playing, laughing, and creating those joyful memories everyone came here for.

When you’re done, you wander back to the park. No sandy car, no parking tickets, no stress. You rinse off in the outdoor shower, take a dip in the pool to cool down, and fire up the BBQ for a well-earned dinner.

That’s the difference between just visiting Byron and experiencing it like an insider. You get all the fun without any of the frustrating logistics that can ruin a day. You get to be the hero who planned the perfect, seamless experience for your friends and family.
